The Review - AT THE MOVIES with WILLIAM HALL
Published: 3 January 2008

Pick of the Indies

I HEARD this week that my favourite independent film of 2007 has been nominated for a Bafta.
In The Hands Of The Gods, made by a team that includes Belsize Park brothers Ben and Gaby Turner, tells the story of five football mad freestylers – people who do unbelievable tricks with a ball – as they busk round the world in a quest to meet their hero, Diego Maradona. It entertained me no end, so good luck at the awards, lads, you deserve it.
The Prince Charles Theatre off Leicester Square are screening a big favourite, The Big Lebowski, on Wednesday January 9. Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore and star in this mangled tale of bowling, kidnap, weeing on peoples rugs, avant garde art, hyper-violent Vietnam vets and classy cocktails.
Go and check out this marvellous and odd-ball flick on a big screen. It’s worth it. An aside: my mate Pete saw Jeff Bridges eating a meal in a posh Soho restaurant, so he sent him over one of the Lebowski’s fave drink: a White Russian. The Dude did what you’d expect: put it to his lips, winked at Pete’s table, and necked it in one. Nice work.
The Curzon Soho plays host to a cinematic version of the world’s greatest magazine: yes, its the Fortean Times on the silver screen. The Fortean Times, whose editor Paul Sieveking lives in Kentish Town, has brought us nonsensical weirdness, odd phenomena and scientific curios from around the world for many years and the chance to see it all in glorious technicolour is too good to miss. The Fortean Times is the magazine based on the philosophy of Charles Fort, the Victorian investigator who loved pondering life’s big questions and was hugely sceptical of any form of established thought. The film is screened on Saturday at 6pm.
Other indie highlights in January include an ICA event featuring West Country film collective Bristol Meth. They pull together a series of no-budget flicks on January 7, and it includes – get this – the award winning feminist skate documentary called Don’t Do Tricks. Yes, it is a comedy.
