PREVIEW - NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA
Roundhouse
THE new year gets off to an exciting if unusual start at the Roundhouse, with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain taking to the stage at the old turntable engine shed on January 4.
The NYO will be the first classical orchestra to play the Roundhouse since it reopened in 2005 – Electric Proms tokenism aside – so the concert provides a unique chance to hear these supremely talented youngsters whip up a storm in one of our most exciting venues.
James MacMillan, the UK’s most celebrated composer, leads the NYO on a dramatic journey through music fired by heart and soul, with the NYO set to become the first youth orchestra to play MacMillan’s symphony.
The breadth of the programme for the Roundhouse performance reflects both the talent and ambition of the NYO.
The youngsters will turn on tragic romance in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and the stormy passions of Britten’s Sea Interludes.
Then MacMillan conducts his own Symphony: Vigil, leading the NYO on a joyous spiritual quest.
The Scottish composer has assembled this programme to tap into the orchestra’s blazing commitment and youthful fervour.
He will work closely with the musicians during the 10-day rehearsal course, discussing his inspiration for Vigil, and working with other professional musicians as the young musicians rehearse together and play their instruments for nine hours each day, living and breathing music.
The NYO’s unique rehearsal process helps forge a dynamic unit capable of taking audiences on an awe-inspiring musical journey.
Some 70 new talented young musicians will play with the NYO for the first time, joining existing members to create a mighty 160-strong orchestra.
This will be the NYO’s first London appearance since their triumphant performance of Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony at the 2007 Proms – and who could forget their performance at this year’s Glastonbury festival?
An energetic evening is clearly in store – perfect to shake off those post-Christmas January blues. Roundhouse booking line: 0870 389 1846
