The Review - AT THE MOVIES with WILLIAM HALL
Published: 27 December 2007

Period drama is pitch perfect

DON’T TOUCH THE AXE
Directed by Jacques Rivette
Certificate PG

GUILLAUME Depardieu, son of legendary heartthrob Gerard, cuts a dashing figure in white breeches and black thigh-length boots in a romantic period piece set in 19th-
century France.

No doubt about it, he has all the charisma and strength of his father as he pursues a lost love (Jeanne Balibar) for five long years after she walked out on him.
As a much-decorated soldier he is invited to all the best society parties, while admitting: “I fear I am not an amusing guest,” as his mind is fixed on other things.
The elusive lady in question has taken refuge in a convent to get over their old affair and avoid any temptations of the flesh.
But in this adaptation of the famous novel by Honore De Balzac she finally emerges to meet him again and indulge in flirtatious exchanges while she plots her own future.
Here is a sumptuous offering full of pent-up passion and lingering glances before the lady finds out, too late, that she loved him after all.
One for insatiable romantics.
