The Review - AT THE MOVIES with WILLIAM HALL Published: 20 December 2007

I Have a gripe: when review tickets to the opera come to the New Journal, despite my protestations that I am sure I’d be capable of writing a perfectly good and well-informed piece about what it is all about and whether it is any good, I’m laughed at. Instead, they are passed on to our resident opera reviewer, a retired professional signer who has around 50 years of experience.
I can’t think why... but it means I have yet to go to the opera, and it has become an object of some fascination to me.
So I was pleased to hear that the Everyman Cinema Club has come up with a rather interesting concept: they are screening live footage from the Metropolitan Opera Season from New York. Kicking off at the beginning of January, the first in line is Hansel and Gretel. Starring Alice Coote and Christine Schafer, this English language production is Engelbert Humperdinck’s treatment of the Grimm fairy tale and was originally written for the Welsh National Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Other highlights in January include Verdi’s Macbeth and Puccini’s Manon Lescaut.
I may not be an opera buff but I’d like to become one, and I am looking forward to checking out this exciting idea – particularly when you think of how good the sound system is at the Everyman, and the fact the price of ticket includes a glass of champagne.
Don’t forget, this Sunday the Everyman Cinema Club is hosting a special screening of the James Stewart film It’s A Wonderful Life in aid of our Christmas Hamper appeal. Cambridge don and TV historian Colin Shindler presents the film with the New Journal’s film critic William Hall. Shindler teaches film studies and specialises in the films of his close friend Frank Capra. The film starts at 2.45pm and the cost of a ticket includes a mince pie and a glass of wine.
Remember, its all for a great cause and you can watch this Christmas classic by booking your tickets on 0207 435 1600. DAN CARRIER
