The first day of Christmas

PREVIEW: ROYAL FREE MUSIC SOCIETY CAROLS
St Mark’s Church

’TIS the season to be jolly, and the halls of St Marks Church, in Prince Albert Road, are sure to be decked with boughs of holly on Saturday when the Royal Free Music Society spread some seasonal joy with their annual Christmas carol recital.
Fast becoming something of a tradition in these parts, the recital – appropriately taking place 12 days before Christmas – will feature all your favourite festive classics as well as a sprinkling of works you won’t hear on a Tesco advertisement.
Since Christmas is the time of giving, the society are giving the audience a chance to take part in the proceedings.
Royal Free doctor, society conductor and co-founder of the choir Andrew Rochford tells me that audience participation is encouraged, especially from the children in the audience.
And if any of the pieces prove particularly popular, he assures me that the choir won’t be averse to singing them more than once over the course of the evening!
Purchasing a programme (£7.50 at the door) is all you need to do to take part in this evening of music, which is sure to get your Christmas off to the perfect start.
And just in case the carols leave you cold, a few cups of mulled wine at the interval are sure to get you into the swing of things.
If you can’t make it along on Saturday but fancy giving your vocal chords a bit of a workout in the new year, why not join the society in their weekly rehearsals at the Peter Samuel Hall, in the Royal Free Hospital Medical School on Haverstock Hill? The society meets every Tuesday at 7.30pm, and while the atmosphere is informal, members can enjoy taking part the performance of music that is both varied and challenging.
n The RFMS Christmas Concert is at St Mark’s Church, Regent’s Park, on Saturday at 7.30pm.
