The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 13 Decemebr 2007
NATTY, known to his mother as Alex Modiano, is a 24-year-old singer from Parliament Hill. Having been releasing music on his own label – Pressure and Vibes – he was recently snapped up by Atlantic Records and is planning to release his first album next year.
We had an interesting time talking about the perils of the record industry and the rights and wrongs of private education.
A confident guy, he has already done some big shows alongside Kelis and the Skatalites, and played with Kate Nash and Hard-Fi. But cool as a cucumber, he’s not the type to get nervous, it seems.
Interview going well, very good. And then I did what interviewers sometimes do – I asked him who he considered he was similar too. I made a comparison and it went down like a ton of bricks.
He complained that he’d spent most of the interview explaining why he shouldn’t be pigeonholed.
He explained how artists get lumped together, and how it was harder sometimes to carve out a niche if you’re making music classified in the record shop stalls as “urban”.
Point taken.
Either way, the guy’s got a lot to say for himself, but better still, his songs speak for themselves.
I would recommend listening: go to www.myspace.com/ natty4d or catch him at the Blue Flowers venue in the George IV pub in Chiswick on Sunday.
