A GIG based on whingeing doesn’t sound like that much fun, it’s true. But Cultures of Resistance – now in their second year – will deliver a lot more than a soapbox lecture.
They may well have organised their show as a means of protest, but that doesn’t have to be to the detriment of the music. And indeed, it isn’t.
Last year their line-up, headlined by jazz maestro Courtney Pine, won rave reviews, both for the music and the ambition of the night – this year should be no different.
In no particular order, the night will feature Jerry Dammers, a founding member of ska band The Specials, who also took part in 2006, and Mobo winner Denys Baptiste.
The London saxophonist has not released anything since 2004, when his third album, Let Freedom Ring – a tribute to Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement – came out. But don’t hold that against the Mercury-nominated artist.
Meanwhile drum and bass performers The Bays – who don’t release records, don’t have a record label and only play improvised sets based on the mood of the audience – promise to be something special too.
And the stand-out turn of the evening is bound to be Camden reggae star-in-the-making, Natty. Already signed to a major label, he has been quietly making a name for himself in and around these parts.
Ultimately, however, the night is bigger than its stars, and the whole point of Cultures of Resistance is to celebrate resistance around the world.
