It’s Subtransmission impossible for Jordan
SUBTRANSMISSION
Courtyard Theatre
JORDAN is a young man sitting alone in his room who must come to terms with his sexuality, the coldness of his middle-class parents as well as the whims of his boyfriend, unable to decide between his girlfriend and him. Ever resourceful, after seeing an advert on the internet, Jordan orders what he thinks will be the solution to all his woes.
The fact that the package turns out to be a transvestite fairy godmother is symptomatic of a production that tries hard to please but is ultimately consumed by its own complexity.
Subtransmission is played out by a cast with obvious conviction both for the subject matter as well as for their characters. However, they are stretched to their limits by the demands of the songs and can’t always seem to hit the standard the piece requires to adequately bring it to life.
The high point of the two-hour-plus production is a two-minute softcore video of the two boys in bed.
The cast and team deserve full marks for effort, but too often the writing and production standards undermine their hard-fought efforts at credibility. Subtransmission is ultimately, I’m afraid, substandard.
