Boring? Will’s way with pop art wins us over from start
REVIEW: WILL YOUNG UNION CHAPEL
(MENCAP LITTLE NOISE SESSIONS)
ONLY Will Young can bounce excitedly up and down while singing a slow, sappy love song, and finish it off with a high jump and a dazzling smile. I admit I was sceptical at first, and, although I won’t be rushing out to buy all the albums that to date have not made their way into my CD collection, it is impossible to not like Will.
His music is utterly inoffensive and rather bland, but there’s no question he can sing. Add to that, dimples to die for, a healthy dose of self-irony, and a contagious energy, and he completely had me in the end.
However, he had the audience from the beginning and they received him with wild screams which were repeated throughout the acoustic set. The ladies sang along to nearly every song and Will and the band lapsed into a bit of much-appreciated round of freestyling to finish off.
I don’t think Will is as boring as his songs suggest, and he could certainly afford to add a bit of attitude to his repertoire, but what he does clearly works.
