I REMEMBER it well.
Being ushered into what appeared at the time a complete wrong ’un as far as gig venues went. A church? How’s that work then, I thought... only it does, really.
The Little Noise gigs for Mencap at the Union Chapel are definitely something out of the ordinary, and because they’re all acoustic, it’s a good way of sorting the men from the boys, to use a sexist phrase.
Last year The Kooks really held their own, while Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and Plan B paled slightly under the “no electric” glare – and that was just one night out of a host of storming gigs.
Meanwhile, look out for an interview with the Bad Robots next week. I plan to get “beardy Ben” – as frontman Ben who works at Stables Market is known around these parts – to spill all about their starring role in the T4 show Mobileacts Unsigned (in association with Sony Ericsson and Orange... I got asked to put that bit in).
Anyway, the Robots have got through to the final six in the competition – well done – and it’s all still to play for. The four-piece, who describe themselves as rock’n’roll spat out by the Clash and the Beach Boys, have already been mentored by Kate Nash (she’s a bit young to be giving lessons ain’t she?).
Watch Roisin Murphy give them a bit of advice on the show on Saturday, while Athlete take their turn on Sunday. That doesn’t sound like a weekend off to me.
