LITTLE NOISE SESSIONS (Various)
Union Chapel
THE first thing to remember about Union Chapel gigs is that they’re dry. I don’t mean that in the slang sense – crusty and crap – no, no, no.
I mean people yam their drinks in the bar upstairs in a 15-minute interval before rushing to get back to their seats for the show.
And that’s because the Union Chapel in Highbury is a working church.
It opens its doors in the morning to people clutching prayerbooks and leaves them open for people pumping glowsticks at night.
Ok, maybe not quite, seeing as all the bands onstage for the Mencap Little Noise Sessions, which starts on Tuesday, will be acoustic... but you get the idea.
Little Noise Sessions is in its second year after impressively pulling in a prestigious group of musicians including Noel Gallagher and Amy Winehouse last year.
This time around another collection of stars have been rounded up and penned for more of the same. The story-telling marvel that is Laura Marling is my tip for greatness, Will Young will add a touch of camp cool – not to mention good songs – and The Kooks, The Enemy, Babyshambles, Snow Patrol and Keane will do what they say on the tin.
Adele and The Pigeon Detectives are the wildcards who could shine like the diamond in Romancing The Stone, while Athlete will be functional.
Yes, it will be as fun as all that – so what more do you need to be yapped into attendance (I’m running with my shepherd dog theme).
Well OK... it’s all for charity.
The Mencap Arts Awards scheme – where all the money from the gigs will go – provides grants to local arts projects for people with learning difficulties.
I’ll leave it to compere Jo Whiley, whose sister has learning difficulties, to sum it all up: “Mencap’s Little Noise Sessions are a great opportunity to see big name bands play an acoustic gig in an intimate setting, whilst raising money for a really worthwhile cause.” • Tickets cost £35, to buy tickets visit www.mencapmusic.org.uk
