The Review - AT THE MOVIES with WILLIAM HALL Published: 8 November 2007

HEAD down to the Odeon in Swiss Cottage on Tuesday November 13th to hear actress Tracy-Ann Oberman discuss the film My Mexican Shivah
. It is part of the Jewish Film Festival and features music by a band that is a
personal favourite of mine, The Klezmatics.
Based in New York, their take on klezmer music is beautiful and funky, and by providing a soundtrack to this dark comedy, they have helped create a modern classic. Set in the Jewish quarter of Mexico City, My Mexican Shivah tells the story of how the death of our hero Moishe results in a wonderful celebration of a life.
Other stuff: when you settle in your seat at the Phoenix cinema, it is hard not to be distracted from the opening credits by the friezes that run down either side of the picture houses walls. They feature Grecian-style scenes honouring the world of drama. Still in mint condition, they remind you of when going to the pictures was a big deal.
With this in mind it makes the Phoenix a suitable setting for a talk next week by Birkbeck College’s cinema expert Professor Ian Christie on the social impact of film.
The talk is part of a series called London on Location. It looks at how the metropolis has been shot, famous locations in the city and also the growth of the picture house in London.
