A production that fails to screw its courage to the sticking place
MACBETH
Pentameters Theatre
CORDIAL Productions’ take on Shakespeare’s tragic tale of treachery and revenge opens with the shrieking of the hags (Sarah Whitehouse, Chloe Metcalfe and Katherine Laurie) on the heath and continues as a faithful adaptation of the piece, with two bouts of prophesies from the witches, numerous murders and our anti-hero’s untimely demise. The set is simple – a table and stools, arch doors and a bit of ivy – but effective. The cast is strong all around (notably Whitehouse, Metcalfe, Laurie and Arran Glass, as the vengeful Macduff), although Macbeth (Anthony Cord), as the tragic anti-hero spurred on to his ultimate demise by his ambition and Lady Macbeth (Elizabeth Arends), falling to pieces for going too far, lacked a little fire at times.
The production could have afforded to take more risks, opting for more originality, but it remains an enjoyable adaptation. Until November 11
