It’s the end of the world
OF TWO DAYS Pleasance Theatre
EVIE and Smithy are childhood sweethearts who together end the life of school friend Charlie. When he attempts to rape Evie after the school hockey match their lives will never be the same again. Shifted 10 years later and set against the backdrop of the end of the world in 2012, Evie and Smithy must come to terms with their crime and their years spent apart as they wait for the tidal wave that will bring their own demise.
Of Two Days makes a brave attempt to deal with issues of loss and the price we pay for our mistakes. Aspects of the script do border on dramatic cliché, though these are easily forgiven because of the convincing portrayal by Natasha James and Richard Jackson of a couple whose past threatens to overwhelm them while they struggle to understand what it means for their present.
C54 Theatre’s new piece makes an intriguing evening even though the script, produced by the cast, tends towards the more melodramatic aspects of the relationship rather than simply allowing the natural tension between the characters to unfold. Jamie Harper’s direction is able if slightly flashy but ultimately constrained by the implausibility of the dramatic climax that threatens to wash away the audience’s investment in the piece. 020 7609 1800
