Pick of the Indies
EVER since Jim Broadbent sat in a pub in Mike Leigh’s 1990 film Life Is Sweet and uttered the lines: “Football died the day Arsenal done the double,” your Pick of the Indies correspondent has had a soft spot for him.
And now he is serious box office – his turns in films such as Moulin Rouge, Vera Drake and Hot Fuzz mean he is no longer recognisable simply to British
audiences.
So much excitement to learn that Jim is appearing this Sunday at the Screen on the Hill in Haverstock Hill to help the cinema celebrate its 30th birthday.
In a new season to mark the anniversary, the cinema have asked well-known actors to pick a film screened at the independent cinema over the years and present it.
Jim has chosen Japanese Akira
Kurosawa’s 1985
Samurai film Ran – an epic saga based loosely on King Lear. It tells the story of the elderly emperor Hidetora and his three offspring who don’t get on very well with each other.
Jim introduces the film at 1pm on Sunday. Other actors due to appear in the next couple of months include Imelda Staunton and Emma Thompson. DAN CARRIER
