Night of soul sensations
PREVIEW - KENT RECORDS
The Forum
WHAT with the never-ending vogue for retro tunes – 80s electro, 90s rave and so on – it’s astonishing that the ghost of 60s Northern Soul has yet to be resurrected. Until now, that is.
Amy Winehouse has whet the public’s appetite with her done-me-wrong wailings, and now Kent Records are throwing a bash to celebrate 25 years of selling soulful grooves.
There’s a whole lot of history going into the night.
Kent Records started off as Rock On Records on Camden High Street, before moving to Kentish Town and then to their current home in Harlesden in Brent.
Furthermore, expect to see raucous delight on the faces of our 80s brothers and sisters as they relive their teenage days at the Forum, then known as the Town and Country Club, with DJ Wendy May at the helm.
Oh No Not My Baby 60s soul sensation Maxine Brown, who has been enjoying something of a career revival since the 90s, is headlining.
Despite never hitting the pinnacle of fame – unlike her former labelmate Dionne Warwick – she is acknowledged as having one of the finest soul voices around.
The Flirtations and Baltimore’s Winfield Parker will also be on hand to add extra sparkle.
So, it doesn’t matter that you’ve never heard of any of them or that it’s a steep £22: with a pedigree like that you’re guaranteed a good time.
