Rapping rodents make Cinders top family fun

Panto:Cinderella
Hackney Empire

The Hackney Empire continues its run of superlative pantos with a dazzling version of Cinderella.
Written by the Empire’s resident director Susie McKenna, it hits your funny bone from the off and never lets go.
It’s not so much the gags, which are of the joke-book variety, but the five-star comic performances, chief among them Three Non Blonde Tameka Empson as the Wicked Stepmother from Jamaica and Michael Kirk and David Ashley’s Ugly Sisters, Lav and Loo.
Classy show tunes, grand set pieces and rapping rodents add to the fun, while Lovers Rock star Janet Kay belts out some great numbers as the Fairy Godmother.
Surrounded by so much glamour and glitz, Cinders (Donna Steele) and her Prince Charming (Steven Cree) struggle to shine and the 1920s setting, though interesting, doesn’t quite work.
But in a show that has the audience in the palm of its hand throughout these are minor carpings. If you only have the opportunity to go to one panto this Christmas, then this is the one to choose.
