SEASON PREVIEW
UCL BLOOMSBURY THEATRE
THEATRE-GOERS have plenty to get their teeth into in a diverse and exciting new season of comedy and performance at the UCL Bloomsbury Theatre, but watch out – a few of the acts have a bite of their own.
The weird and wonderful world of Dr DiMaglio’s Secrets rises blinking and chaotic from a subterranean Euston basement. The show has wowed audiences in the know for the past three years. Now, for one night only (October 20) the secret is out.
Award-winning actor Cyril Nri meets the green-eyed monster as Othello, in Birmingham Stage Company’s six-performances-only production of the Shakespeare tragedy, directed by John Harrison.
Even the children’s shows have sharp teeth, with the London stage debut of the hugely successful Horrible Histories books beginning October 1. The Ruthless Romans brings all the evil emperors and gory gladiators alive in a special ‘Bogglevision’, while the Awful Egyptians (pictured) gives the lowdown on Tutankhamen and mummification in uproarious detail.
It’s not all grisly though. For those with more delicate sensibilities, BBC 2 Mock The Week comedian Russell Howard is sure to win laughs with his infectious and charming banter-filled stand up, while the celebrated Balanescu Quartet perform works by Pablo Mainetti ,the most talented composer of Argentina’s new Tango generation, accompanied by cinematic projections in Transtango.
