Pick of the Indies
DIRECTOR Ken Loach has been appointed a patron of the Phoenix cinema in East Finchley – and is celebrating by hosting a screening of his hard hitting new film It’s A Free World at the cinema on Tuesday.
Speaking to Pick of the Indies, Loach said the cinema – one of the oldest independent theatres still open – was a favoured place to watch movies.
The Phoenix offers an antidote to the chains, he said: “It is a great place to watch films and it avoids the problems so many soulless multiplexes have nowadays, where going the cinema seems to be mainly about eating.”
It’s A Free World, which received its British premiere on Channel 4 this week, tells the story of Angie, a 33-year-old woman who has stumbled from one job poorly paid job to another until she is fed up with being treated badly. Angie decides it is her turn to do the exploiting and sets up an agency to provide cheap, illegal labour.
Loach said he hoped the message he was sending would help people think about the problems many migrants faced.
He said: “I wanted to concentrate on Angie and what she symbolises. To her, everyone represents a deal. She just wants to get labour as cheap as possible, and she is completely ruthless. “This kind of attitude is approved by our society. It is the law of the jungle, and it is seen as acceptable. I wanted to highlight this.”
The screening is on October 2 at 6.pm. Tel: 020 8883 2233.
Ken Loach will be screening a surprise film at this year’s Raindance Festival which opened yesterday (Wednesday), featuring a wide range of films from around the world. It runs until October 7 at Cineworlds in Haymarket and Shaftesbury Avenue and AT the Rex Cinema in Rupert Street. www.raindance.co.uk
