Stuntman makes rods for his injured back
HOT ROD- DIRECTED BY AKIVA SCHAFFER
CERTIFICATE 12a
Ouch! Don’t try this at home, children!
Andy Samberg, one of the stars of the US comedy TV hit show Saturday Night Live, makes his screen debut as a novice stuntman desperate to live up to his late father’s reputation as a daredevil stand-in for Evel Knievel.
The trouble is that he hasn’t actually been able to clear the length of his local “kiddie pool”, so the idea of jumping 15 school buses doesn’t fill his friends with too much hope for his immediate future.
But our boy is determined to raise the money for a heart operation for his crusty stepfather (Ian McShane), because he’s going to miss their scheduled tussles in the basement if the old chap pegs out.
McShane, taking some comic relief from Deadwood, is hilarious as a below-the-belt brawler who enjoys nothing more than hurling his hapless stepson into a stack of shelves in their daily cellar scraps.
Andy’s disaster-prone attempts to prove himself macho man will make you wince even as you’re laughing – I’m told that all the stunts were performed live, which gives them an extra edge.
Samberg emerges from the chaos as an amiable cove with a likeable personality. But I find it hard to imagine any follow-up for him after this goofy comedy, which contains enough painful nose-dives to make it a sure-fire candidate for You’ve Been Framed.
