The Review - MUSIC - GROOVES with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS
Published: 20 September 2007

I NEVER went to Bagley’s. The domain of the cool kids, it was the place to go in the 90s and if you weren’t there you were square.
But by the noughties it had lost its sheen – the acid house rave days were over and a warehouse like Bagley’s was no longer in demand.
So after a glamorous facelift it turned into the Key and Canvas – younger sister of the famous Cross club and its legendary tropical garden.
In short, it’s a clubbers paradise.
But not for much longer – the £2billion regeneration of King’s Cross means the tenancies at the three clubs are not being renewed and the buildings are due to be turned into flats, shops and offices.
I for one will be sorry to see them go. They are part of Camden kids’ heritage; you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone over the age of 18 who doesn’t have fond memories of the place.
Meeting the owner of the clubs, Billy Reilly, really drove it home to me that there is no place else in London like it.
Although he says he is keen for change, I can’t help thinking he doesn’t have much choice: if you can’t beat ’em you’ve got to join ’em, right?
Why do we want more shops? People need to have fun as well – you can’t live on Mango and Zara alone.
