A Holloway hit parade?
PREVIEW: THE HOLLOWAYS Astoria
ISLINGTON bounders, The Holloways, surf their wave of hype into the Astoria on Saturday. The four-piece, who formed in 2004 after meeting in Nambucca in Holloway Road, have been forging a name for themselves with a rumbustious live act and a string of dance-friendly hits, including 2005’s catchy Two Left Feet.
But despite single Generator being voted the NME’s 16th best tune of 2006, they have never quite managed to shake off persistent accusations that they are merely Libertines-lite media cannon fodder, and will be hoping to do just that.
They’re being supported by The Wombats, a Liverpudlian band in a similar, if slightly poppier, mould. As well as their top 40 hit, Kill The Director, the band are distinguished by having a huge, if unlikely, fanbase in China, thanks to a gig they played in Beijing in 2005. They’re planning some more unusual gigs, including a trip to Malawi.
A lively evening is in store – both bands are nothing if not unpredictable. And both groups have promised a great deal for a while now, but have yet to fully deliver.
Who’s going to make the grade? Only you can tell.
