THE stars of the best British film released this autumn will be showing off their skills in the streets of Hampstead on Sunday. In The Hands Of The Gods, the documentary following the progress of five football freestylers as they trek half-way round the world to try and meet Diego Maradona, will be demonstrating some of their tricks at the Everyman cinema at Hollybush Vale. The film will also be screened – and the directors, Belsize Park brothers Ben and Gaby Turner will be on hand to answer questions after the show.
The screening starts at 12pm.
A month of Russian cinema kicks off this weekend at the Renoir in Bloomsbury and the Curzon in Mayfair. The events mark the anniversaries of the October revolution of 1917 and the launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957.
On Sunday two dead-pan Russian comedies kick off the season – Tishe and The Belovs – in a previously unseen double bill.
Tishe was inspired by View From The Window at Le Gras, the first photograph ever taken. Tishe consists of of shots of a St Petersburg street taken from the same window over the course of year.
The Belovs features the story of the twice-widowed Anna Feodorovna Belova, who lives with her brother Mikhail. The pair like a cup of tea and discussion of philosophical conundrums.
The Belovs draw on the Russian influences of Tolstoy and Chekov and what strikes most of all is the wonderfully insightful comments the pair make. Dan Carrier
