Pick of the Indies
THE London Asian film Festival kicks off tonight (Thursday) and has 30 films on show over the next 10 days.
Featuring 12 British premieres, the festival, at the Curzon Soho, the Curzon Mayfair and the Renoir Bloomsbury is showing movies which illustrate the vast range of styles produced by the biggest movie industry in the world.
And one of the highlights will be a question and answer session with renowned Chinese film director Lu Chuan.
His film Mountain Patrol is shown tonight (Thursday). Backed by National Geographic, the film is billed as an adventure story, borrowing from American westerns.
The patrol is a group established to protect rare antelope under threat from poachers. Photographer Yu Lai is taken into the trust of the group and he charts their often dangerous mission to save the herd.
And Indian director Ram Gopal Varma is also featured. His films unmask an India of violent crime and are far removed from the colourful Bollywood fare the Indian industry is best known for in Britain.
Varma’s movie company has been dubbed India’s version of the Godfather, and the director will be answering questions about his work after the screening.
