Four days of Blue Note brilliance at the Jazz Café
PREVIEW: CASSANDRA WILSON
Jazz Cafe
BLUE Note jazz singer Cassandra Wilson is doing a four-day stint at the Jazz Café next week.
While she has never been a commercial smash in the popcharts, her subtle musical style has won her accolades and fans alike within the jazz world since she first began performing in the 1980s.
After moderate success as a solo singer, she joined the collective M-Base, which became known for its interweaving of her improv voice with freestyle jazz instrumentals.
Apart from recording under her own name with the JMT label, it was her 1996 album New Moon Daughter that earned her a grammy for best jazz vocal performance for which she is best known. Her love of Miles Davis, which inspired a tribute album in the late 1990s, is also an influence.
Ms Wilson’s residency runs from Sunday September 21 to Thursday September 27. Go to www.jazzcafe.co.uk for tickets.
