Ball boys get their kicks on mission to meet Maradona

ALL we know about them is that their names are Danny, Jem, Sami, Mike and Woody, five likely lads from south London who are not only soccer mad but experts in the art of ‘free-styling’, which, broadly speaking, means they can make a football sit up and beg.
Their acrobatics have to be seen to be believed – from lying on their backs with the ball jumping from one foot to the other, to bouncing it on their forehead, nose and neck, their control must have taken years to perfect.
But now they have the weirdest of ambitions: with no money, they decide to hustle, bustle and blag their way to Argentina to shake the cheating hand of their idol – Diego Maradona, no less.
How they accomplish it – or don’t – makes for a fascinating drama documentary following the trail of this strange odyssey via New York, Dallas, Acapulco, Rio and (for some of them) Buenos Aires and the home of their hero. They make their money for each leg of the journey by busking on the streets, living for the moment and never knowing what will happen next.
“Life’s all about risks and challenges,” says the leader, Danny, spurring them on when disasters occur and their spirits start to flag.
It’s a strange little film, yet rather appealing – and you don’t have to be a football addict to enjoy it. But maybe to wonder at their strange choice of hero-worship. I mean, what’s wrong with David Beckham?
