High note at great Scott's
RONNIE SCOTT'S
47 Frith Street, W1

A DELIGHTFUL way to spend an evening. Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, established in l965, reopened in June after extensive refurbishment by Parisian designer Jacques Garcia.
It is much as I remembered it with lush burgundy velvet seats. The layout is excellent giving everyone a good view of the show.
Ronnie Scott’s Pre-Show menu is served between 6pm and 9.30 pm. Their resident artists, The James Pearson Trio, play during this time. Guests can arrive early, enjoy the music and leave before the show. Or, as I did, arrive at 8pm with the view of staying for the main show which starts at 10pm.
On the night I attended the visiting guest star was US soul star Alexander O’Neal. It was as much fun to listen to him and his band as it was to watch the crowd enjoying the show so much. Everybody joined in and it was a big party all around.
Non-members are welcome and tickets costing £26 and £46 can be bought in advance.
The dining tables are arranged on the mezzanine and lower level next to the stage.
Well trained staff look after the dinner guests taking their orders and then bringing the food with great efficiency and care. We started with crumble baked sardine filets with a herb crust and smoked salmon and asparagus with poached egg and Hollandaise Sauce which were very good indeed.
The sardines were decorated with balsamic vinegar whilst the smoked salmon was neatly arranged over the asparagus with the egg on top.
To follow I had the crispy roast duck breast with parsnip puree, honey and lime sauce which was delicious. My dining companion ordered the crab risotto which was delicious and cooked al dente. The three course menu (£30) included a choice of dessert or cheese. We ordered the lemon posset, decorated with a thin lemon slice. I believe these are baked with sugar to make them crisp. The cheese platter consisted of cheddar, stilton and goat’s cheese served with biscuits, grapes and celery.
We had their excellent house red wine, a Merlot at £l6.
Congratulations to Sally Greene, the new owner. Her theatrical connections coupled with a well thought-out menu and excellent service auger the best for this legendary institution which has played host to the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Larry Adler and Eric Clapton. In October Ronnie’s Bar will be launched on the first floor which will open from 11am to 6pm and will offer a light speciality menu featuring oysters, lobster tail, Cornish crab fishcakes, quail breast, Welsh rack of lamb, organic beef burger with chunky chips and roasted vegetable pie.
Black in décor it will have an outside terrace from where you can sip and enjoy their signature cocktail Ronnie’s Sting – cognac, lemon juice, fresh mint leaves and sugar. |
