Pierrepoint
Lionsgate, £19.99
TIMOTHY SPALL is Albert Pierrepoint, the last hangman in London. This sensitive bio-pic of the life of Britain’s best known executioner suffers from low production values, but enjoys a grand performance from Spall.
High points, if you can call them that, of the hangman’s life includes dispatching the Nazi high command after the Nuremberg trials.
Director Adrian Shergold tries to make the audience feel sympathy and understanding for the lead, but the bottom line is he does a horrible job and you can’t escape the fact no one was forcing him to do it.
