Gaddafi gets the ENO treatment
PREVIEW - GADDAFI
English National Opera
IT is hard to decide whether this really counts as opera, an operatta or a straight forward musical.
But it is brave of English National Opera to embark on a project as unusual as Gaddafi, an entirely new work and a collaboration between the organisation and the outspoken dance group Asian Dub Foundation.
The music is written by Steve Chandra Savale and the group and the piece is an examination of the cult of Gaddafi and his 37-year rule over Libya.
Ramon Tikaram stars as the leader and English National Opera musicians perform alongside North African musicians
After all the turmoil ENO has gone through in recent years, with sudden changes of personnel at the top and very public infighting, the company is in need of a hit. Purists, however, might baulk at the cultural crossover of the work, preferring the more usual diet of Verdi’s La Traviata, Janacek’s Jenufa and Arippina – all works to be featured at the Coliseum over the next few months.
