THIS musical production by 25-year-old Steven Luke Walker, seven years in development, has a radiant glow – full of promise – with a richly melodic score. This is sturdy stuff that sadly suffers from a lack of cutting. There are long passages of book scenes, particularly in the first act, that mire the show in long-winded exposition and character set-up.
It has a clunky and dated feel.
Intertwined into its story of love across the class divide and the religious schisms of 17th-century London there is also a worthy probe into the Plague and the Great Fire of London to anchor it.
There are strong performances from Keith Anthony Higham, who has a powerful voice, and Rebecca Seale’s charming Christine Perry. Until September 15
