Beth Ditto
Heard the Gossip?
PREVIEW: GOSSIP
Kentish Town Forum
LARGER than life singer, and NME’s coolest person of 2006, Beth Ditto is bringing Gossip to the Kentish Town Forum next week. The band is as renowned for Ditto’s outspoken views on her weight and her sexuality, (not to mention her curious penchant for on-stage nudity) as they are for their aggressively political dance-punk.
This summer has done nothing to quell such hype, particularly after their controversial appearances at the Reading and Leeds festivals.
At Leeds, Ditto was content merely to take umbrage at a Confederate flag in the crowd and discuss the size of her genitalia, but at Reading she stripped to her underwear and swore at the crowd between her splayed legs.
These peripheral antics make for an unpredictable show, but shouldn’t detract from a strong stable of songs.
Although they’ve only become known in the UK since anthemic single Standing In The Way Of Control was used in promotional material for Channel 4’s Skins, the band have been performing together since 1999, and have justly earned a reputation as an electrifying live act.
Expect tears, dancing and bucketloads of sweat – Ditto’s infectious energy is even more pronounced in the flesh than on record.
The two dates on September 13 and 14, are part of the tail-end of a mammoth run of touring for the Oregonian three-piece, but rest assured that this fat lady will still sing out, loud and proud. Ed Cumming
