Illuminating moments on the road to the past
PREVIEW - EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED
Hampstead Theatre
SIMON Block’s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated, opens at the Hampstead Theatre on September 19.
A young Jewish American flies to the Ukraine in search of a woman who helped his grandfather escape Europe during World War II; he has a photograph and the name of a village.
He hires the Odessa Heritage Tours, made up of a gruff old man and his English-speaking grandson. The three, plus grandfather’s deranged dog, travel in an old car from Odessa into Ukraine’s heart.
So, accompanied by a blind driver, a sexually excitable dog and an enthusiastic translator with a unique grasp of English, he sets off towards a village no one has heard of, and which doesn’t exist on the map.
Everything Is Illuminated stars Gemma Jones, whose most recent West End credits include Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the Lyric Theatre and And Then There Were None at the Gielgud Theatre. David Ryall at the Hampstead Theatre as well as Denise Gough, Patrick Kennedy and Craig Parkinson.
