Folk shakes off musty cardigan image
PREVIEW - CELLAR UPSTAIRS FOLK FESTIVAL
Exmouth Arms
A VERITABLE folk-fest is going on right in our midst.
The genre, by definition, has always been the final frontier of music, protected from the corrupting ways of commercialisation, because it’s not supposed to be about profit.
But it seems to me folk has shaken off it’s musty smelling cardigan and is going through a revival – dare I say it, it’s even cool again.
Hot on the heels of Graham Coxon doing an acoustic set at the Green Note café in Parkway last week and folk hero Arlo Guthrie headlining at Dingwall’s earlier this month comes the Cellar Upstairs Folk Club.
Ok, it’s not so new – it’s about three year old – but it has an amazing line-up and is definitely worth mentioning.
This season’s events kick off on Saturday September 9, featuring Ron Taylor and Jeff Gillett.
Even if you’re a folk novice, go down and have a listen – surely one of the oldest musical genres has something special up its sleeve.
Showtime: 8.15pm at the Exmouth Arms in Starcross Street. Tickets cost £6, nearest Tube Euston.
