Fresh sounds from the Isle of Sheppey
PREVIEW - TOURISTE
Purple Turtlle
September 6
IF you like tormented guitar bands, then Touriste could be the ticket.
Growing up on a diet of Britpop bands, all the major indie groups get a tip of the hat: Radiohead, Coldplay, Oasis and the Stone Roses. Whether that gets you excited or you think ‘obvious’, they have a fresh sound that should get them noticed above the usual copycatters.
Hailing from the Isle of Sheppey (which is off the Kent coastline about 25 miles from London – what, who said this page can’t be educational?), they claim the only notable thing to have come from there so far is Michael Crawford, aka Frank Spencer and the Phantom himself.
It has obviously given these youngsters the desire to stamp Sheppey on the map, or just get out of there.
And their plan to change things starts with their debut single, Battle On, on Manc label Faith and Hope, released September 11, which is a lilting drums-lead ballad, dripping in melancholy but mopped up with a tinkering cheeriness reminiscent of Snow Patrol.
Label mates to up-and-coming Morning Runner and Mint Royale (are they still going?), they’ve already had airplay on BBC Radio 6 and Scotland’s XFM, as well as storming radio stations in America and Canada. Don’t let their obvious commercial appeal put you off – this melodic four-piece could really impress.
