The Squid and the Whale
This is the tale of the effect a divorce has on a family, and although this is not a topic that lends itself readily to laughs, director Noah Baumbach tells the story without the film feeling too sorry for itself.
Set in New York in the 1980s, Baumbach draws on his own memories of his parents splitting up to create this gently paced funny film.
The Berkman family are about to be cleaved apart and the two teenagers are taking sides as their parents go through the processes of disentangling their lives from one another. Baumbach sets them up in tight situations and then lets his characters act exactly how you would hope not to if you were in the same situation. |
