Oklahoma!
There is a school of thought that says Oklahoma! – released this week in a new print format with wide screen and all those add-ons – is too outdated to hold it’s own. With characters that now would offend – Jud is not bad, he is ill, while there are elements of racism pervading other characterisations – the Fred Zinneman film has problems.
But as ever the Rodgers and Hammerstein score is thrilling, the performance of Gordon MacRae as Curly swoonful, and the dancing superb.
Adrift
The story goes like this: a good-looking group on a yacht. They all jump in the sea, frivolous folks that they are. They realise none of them remembered to put a ladder down so they could get on board again. Slowly they drown, or are taken out by monsters from the deep.
Like an elongated version of Big Brother, Adrift asks the viewer to sit and watch people it is hard to find much affinity with get voted out. Only instead of leaving the house to be welcomed by Davina, the cast are taken off to meet Davy Jones.
Not an inspiring premise for a film. |
