Shaffer's classsic Amadeus is heading back on stage
PREVIEW - AMADEUS
Wilton Music Hall
IT is not strictly a classical concert but I cannot resist highlighting the production of Peter Shaffer’s classic play Amadeus at the Wilton Music Hall this month.
The play, inspired by Pushkin’s Mozart and Salieri, has proved a hit since it was premiered at the National Theatre in 1979.
It depicts the furious and bitter rivalry between former court favourite Antonio Salieri and the immature and irritating boy genius Mozart.
Salieri, pretending to be Mozart’s friend and ally, plots against Mozart leading him ultimately to the great composer’s early death.
It was made into a film by Milos Forman and now bound for the stage once more at Wilton’s Music Hall in Whitechapel.
Although slightly out of the official ‘area’ of this column, the production should be worth seeking out. Just 30 performances of the play are scheduled.
It stars Matthew Kelly, who won an Olivier award for his portrayal of the simple Lennie, in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, and is directed by John Doyle.
Running from September 14 to October 14, ring 0870 060 1756 – tickets are likely to sell out quickly.
