The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 30 August 2007
IT’S six years ago. You’ve never heard of them before, but Razorlight, Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs and Coldplay are up on a small stage asking you go out and buy their debut single.
Where are you? Why, you’re at the Dublin Castle in Parkway on a Club Fandango night, silly.
And to celebrate their scouting of some of Britain’s biggest bands of the noughties, the Fandango team have decided to go all-out and throw a big birthday bash.
Now, if you missed the Kaisers et al, just think what’s still left to discover.
A warm-up gig at their musical mecca, the Dublin, on Tuesday, will be followed by Wednesday to Saturday’s knees-up at the new 229 venue in Great Portland Street, and a wind down at the Constitution in St Pancras Way – one of the best pubs in Camden – on Sunday.
And as you’d expect, some of the best soon-to-be household names are coming out to play for the extravaganza. The Mercury prize nominated Maps, Sh*t Disco, Electric Soft Parade and British Sea Power are all due to join the party, while, event partners including BMI, Fierce Panda Records and BBC 6 Music will be adding their picks to the line-up. Diesel
U-Music competition winners The Steers and Get Shakes will also make an
appearance.
At least one of those bands could be the Next Big Thing, as they say – it might be an idea to warn your boss you won’t be coming in.
