PREVIEW - SCHUBERT’S WINTERREISE
Wigmore Hall
SCHUBERT’S Winterreise is one of the most haunting and wonderful pieces of music in the chamber classical canon.
It is a familiar fixture at Wigmore Hall, in Wigmore Street, Marylebone, with some terrific performances there in recent years, perhaps the best by the German baritone Matthias Goerne accompanied by Alfred Brendel.
This week Ian Bostridge, who has established an excellent career having recorded extensively, including Winterreise for Hyperion, and performed across the world, will be performing the song cycle at the beautiful Arts and Crafts Church Holy Trinity in Sloane Square, as part of the Chelsea Schubert festival on Wednesday.
A professor at the Royal Academy of Music, he is perhaps best known for his role of Benjamin Britten’s St Nicolas for Thames Television, and his collaboration with Prunella Scales with whom he performs An Evening with Queen Victoria.
Here he will be accompanied by Sholto Kynoch, former organ scholar at Worchester College, Oxford.
