The Martian chronicles

REVIEW - MARVIN THE MARTIAN
Mucha Macha
Cargo

DO you believe in lucky pants? Lucky hats? I would have said no until I went to Mucha Marcha at Cargo on Friday.
With a recommended hat dress code, the majority of blokes turned up in either trilby’s, bakerboys or ridiculous sombreros. If you’ve ever wondered what dark secrets lurk in your new boyfriend’s closet, chances are one is a stupid hat.
Anyway, back to the lucky hat scenario. One mate turns up in a stolen Smooth Criminal affair and tells us it belongs to a friend, yes, you guessed it, ‘a lucky hat’.
Then it gets nicked by another pal, who then, surprise surprise, pulls! The Trilby Effect?
No, it was all part of the fun that was only the second Mucha Marcha – billed by organisers as “basically about having fun and the chance to listen to all different types of live music and DJ’s under one roof”.
With another one pencilled in for October, the show-stealer of August’s event was definitely Marvin the Martian, while Mr Hudson and The Library (see DotW) came up trumps at May’s inauguration. Turns out Marv is not the rarely sighted looneytunes character but the Brixton rapper who’s making a name for himself in the Grindie scene (grime and indie – keep up people).
His Best songs: Reymell, about his little brother – “Blowing up my condoms like they’re balloons” – and, my favourite, I Don’t Go, about some kind of family tragedy.
With a lot of British acts trying to lose the ‘thug’ tag still favoured by ther US counterparts, Marv is an urban story-teller who doesn’t bother with gun talk. His debut EP Hoods & Badges came out in June.
See him at KOKO’s Stylish Riots night on Saturday.
