Brinkmanship pays off

PREVIEW - THE ON OFFS + INDIANA + BRINKMAN + DJ SARAH DARLING XFM
ULU

HERE’s where I get to shout loudly – I told you so. Brinkman, my favourite band of the year so far (that I’ve got off my backside to see), have been signed to EMI records. No small feat, well done to them.
Bigger and better than the little labels that get you not very much press attention and, more importantly, even less mulah.
Lead singer Paul Cook could already be hailed a songwriting master, and has been cashing in the cheques from Sony for this alone for a while. Although I wouldn’t call him the Gary Barlow of Brinkman – because he’s good looking for starters – he is definitely a talented bloke.
Fans have already been melted by Pillow, A Real Thunderbolt (Amayzing) and Kirsten Dunst, while Music Week (music industry bible) described them as wistful, intelligent pop songs. They’re a little bit Blur, Kinks, Lemonheads, and Beatles.
You can listen to Kirsten on myspace, although – despite desperate pleas from broken-hearted fans – Thunderbolt’s been taken down for good. You’ll only hear it live now, or when they release their debut album.
C’mon Paul, get your finger out. And send me a copy when you do.
The On Offs, a ska-ish raffish combo, won’t be the highlight of this night – don’t dawdle or you’ll miss it. Brinkman are on at 9.30pm.
