Hot Puppies on track to be the 'next big thing'
Hot Puppies
Bull and Gate
HERE’S the dilemma. I wasn’t massively taken with the Hot Puppies but they are a good band.
I think my problem is I never liked Kate Bush, and always take a trip to the toilet if Wuthering Heights comes on the club soundsystem.
The Hot Puppies frontwoman Becky Newman does sound a bit Bush-like. A bit Debbie Harry too, which ain’t so bad.
This is one band that has seen music reviewers throw themselves on the Puppy pyre in a big way – one claimed this is the first band he’s willing to stamp The Next Big Thing since Wet Wet Wet, while the Guardian called them the next Pulp.
They launched their debut album Under The Crooked Moon at the Bull and Gate last Thursday, released on indie heavyweight label Fierce Panda, which saw a big-turnout for the Welsh based quintet, with most knowing the house favourites Green Eyeliner and Terry. Even a never-before-heard song went down well with the crowd.
For me, the best thing about the Puppies are their clever lyrics: “Terry looks so handsome sitting in my father’s chair, airing his despair” – I like the Puppies world, it’s a bit dark, devil may care.
And they have a good solid sound as well, with the opening chords of Terry reminding me of the Kaiser Chiefs of all things.
See? It’s hard to find a bad word to say about them – except if I'm really shallow and pick apart their image, which was a bit green 70's curtain.
If they overhauled their look, i could see them breaking into the mainstream. even unsold me could come around to them. I like dogs you see.
They play the Electric Gardens festival in Kent on Sunday.
