Relationships in the firing line
FROM BOTH HIPS
Old Red Lion Theatre
WILLY the policeman is in danger of losing the respect of his wife after a shooting incident while on duty, but she has yet to learn the true extent of his blunder.
Paul, a chancer and braggart, is the victim of the incident. He has just emerged from hospital to face his complicated domestic set-up of girlfriend, wife and sister-in-law. The audience is immediately drawn into this well-written drama where emotions are at fever pitch, but remain convincing throughout.
Writer Mark O’Rowe claims if you continue to communicate with someone then you are in a relationship, and it is the relationships in the play that amuse, frighten and engage us. The relationship between Willy and Paul, wives and husbands, or the relationship between human and dog are the source of both comedy and tragedy.
The exploration of manliness, violation and revenge echo Thomas Middleton’s tragedies of 17th century.
The acting is tight, the language powerful, and the characters are brilliantly drawn, though it remains unclear why the women are so besotted by their men.
Highly recommended.
