REVIEW: OS MUTANTES
KENTISH TOWN FORUM
by Simon Wroe
ANYONE who witnessed a topless, 60-year-old Iggy Pop trying to gyrate himself to ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ at Glastonbury this year knows that watching your heroes grow old can be a painful thing.
Could the psychedelic Brazilian rockers Os Mutantes (The Mutants), massive in their native country 30 years ago, defy the ‘Iggy’ syndrome when they played the Kentish Town Forum on Friday?
In truth, it’s difficult to say. After what sounded like a pretty limp rendition of lots of folksy 1960s numbers and some of the dreaded “new material”, the crowd went berserk.
Even more beguiling, though excellent, was Os Mutantes’ chosen support. Fellow Brazilians Bonde Do Role (pictured), ably supported by British electro DJs Radioclit and Spank Rock collaborator Amanda Blank, were brash, shouty baille funk whose lead singer, the supremely sexy Marina Vello, could have probably killed the whole Os Mutantes rhythm section with a single pelvic thrust.
To finish off the night, white-hot US DJ and producer Diplo took to the decks with a barrage of grinding basslines, ingenious samples and party favourites (including a sort of reggaeton version of You Can Call Me Al), sending those that stayed crazy.
Reformed rock bands are always a mixed bag but please Mr Promoter, could we at least have a little consistency in the line-up?
