REVIEW: MR HUDSON AND THE LIBRARY
ISLINGTON ACADEMY
by Matthew Finnegan
AFTER a tour of English libraries and setting a record of six performances at Glastonbury this year, you can tell Oxford graduate Mr Hudson likes to do things differently.
I mean, its not every day you come across someone who appears to be influenced by Morrisey, Chet Baker and Dizzee Rascal, is it?
But at the Carling Academy Islington Ben Hudson somehow manages to make this incredibly diverse mix of musical influences come together into a coherent whole. And while such a studied eclecticism could risk making audience members feel about as interested as a 10-year-old on a school library trip, Mr Hudson’s passion for the music makes for an altogether more entertaining prospect.
But for all Hudson’s enthusiasm, and The Library’s obvious talent, there is something missing. When compared to the influx of young, London-based artists around at the moment, Hudson just doesn’t have the edginess of, say, Jamie T, Dizzee Rascal or Plan B.
Still, judging by the crowd reaction, Mr Hudson and the Library certainly appeal to many people, and it looks like this popularity is only set to increase.
