Pick of the Indies
IF you venture out to see only one “alternative” movie this year, make it Pather Panchali – Satyajit Ray’s lyrical, moving homage to Indian rural life at the Renoir later this month.
Arguably India’s greatest director, Ray is the focus of a season of films at the Renoir and Curzon Soho marking the 60th anniversary of India’s independence. It kicks off with a double-bill of Days and Nights in the Forest and The Goddess (Devi) at the Curzon Soho on Sunday.
THERE’s rare film footage of London during and after the Second World War at the Phoenix in East Finchley on Sunday, ranging from home movie footage of the Blitz and victory celebrations in London’s West End to rare newsreel footage. The free London Archive Event – Their Past, Your Future, 1941- 1951– will be hosted by Professor Ian Christie from Birkbeck University.
SOMERSET House’s season of outdoor screenings is certainly a mixed bag – from the new rom-com Knocked Up which kicks off the season tonight (Thursday) to last year’s tepid Johnny Cash bio-pic, Walk the Line. Along the way, there are cult classics like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and the sublime Rear Window.
