Evan Dando

Still life in the Lemonheads

The Lemonheads
Somerset House

EVAN Dando defies logic. It’s almost 20 years since we first pulled The Lemonheads’ debut Hate Your Friends out of its sleeve and rested the needle on the vinyl.
Yet here he is in 2006 with the same luxurious golden retriever locks, the same syrupy sweet voice (despite the fag that dangles cheekily from his upper lip) and a bigger bag of catchy tunes than even Paul McCartney can muster.
Luckily for the populists, Dando wasn’t about to get precious about the back catalogue that’s made his name and he happily churned it out like a tribute band leader sporting a work ethic Margaret Thatcher would baulk at.
Great Big No, Into Your Arms, It’s A Shame About Ray… good grief, someone sign this man up for a Best Of compilation.
Oh, they already have.
So to actually hear Dando throw a couple of pretty fine new songs into the mix just before the end was more than a respite – it was welcome proof that there are songs in the old dog yet.
