Off the wall showmanship
GIG REVIEW: MAN LIKE ME
Madame Jojo’s
TO say that Man Like Me brought the roof down at Madame JoJo’s is perhaps a slight exaggeration as, legend has it this was literally the case at one of their more infamous gigs. Nevertheless, this has to be one of the most entertaining performances I have seen in a long, long time, the Camden trio exhibiting an effortless showmanship that is surely far beyond their
young age.
Taking to the stage with a variety of accessories, including pearl necklaces, a fez and 3D specs, Man Like Me (aka Johnny Langer), Peter “Pesk” Duffy and Ed Laliq are soon joined on stage by a group of scantily clad young ladies, a giant disco mirror ball – even a step ladder appears at one point.
Not bad for a quiet night then.
When watching a bare-chested Man Like Me climbing up the venue walls, throwing himself into the audience and joining in with the hilarious synchronised dance moves of his backing band, it is hard to believe this is the same person who once claimed in these very pages that he “never wanted to be a front man”.
Man Like Me’s lyrics combine a contemporary relevance (‘Oh My Gosh’) with a wit, charm and cockney barrow-boy cheekiness (‘Single Dad’ and ‘Fruit’) not seen since fellow Camdenites Madness, while their unique brand of cartoon-like
grime-pop creates a carnivalesque
hysteria among the audience.
* Man Like Me play at 333 Club on Friday August 3
