GIG REVIEW: THE BRAVERY
Electric Ballroom
by Richard Osley
WHEN The Bravery belt out “I swear I never meant for this” during the chorus of Honest Mistake, you might wonder whether they are lamenting their role as indie’s most recent one- hit wonders. I’m not saying they are another Chesney Hawkes but the one and only song that anybody associates with this band is Honest Mistake, a rolling blast of rock.
It sounds good. But that’s it.
Shame then, that on the basis of their turn at the Electric Ballroom last Tuesday there is nothing in their new work to suggest they haven’t peaked too soon.
Honest Mistake was recorded nearly three years ago and, try as they might, The Bravery could not stand a whole show up with it.
There were songs that sound a bit like their big hit, some bleeping percussion and layered guitars but Sam Endicott’s theatrical vocals always seemed to be on the brink of descending into a half-baked Morrissey impression.
You want The Bravery to be as good as The Killers or Razorlight or one of the other revivalists that made indie sound cool again two years ago. They probably want the same thing – so we are all likely to end up disappointed.
