THE HOLLYWOOD/UKRAINE BACKERS AUDITION
New End Theatre
FRANK Lazarus, the actor and musician in this one-man show, has a lunatic grin.
Lazarus has a lot to smile about – “my dream of playing on Broadwaycame true,” he announces at beginning of his part autobiographical part tribute act.
His musical revue about Chico Marx, the talented pianist and gambling black sheep of the Marx Brothers, got its first break at the New End Theatre in 1979 after a triumphant run on the Edinburgh Fringe.
After Hampstead, it transferred to the West End where it won rave reviews and high profile best comedy and musical awards. Soon after – and this is where smiles began – the show went to Broadway, where it stayed for 18 months scooping two Tony Awards.
As composer and actor in the Chico Marx role, Lazarus describes his and co-writer Dick Vosburgh’s hair–raising adventures in the Broadway piranha pool and recreates the audition to obtain backing for the Broadway production which he performed many times.
Thirty years on, Lazarus is back at the New End. A little self-indulgent, but the night is full of witty songs and one-liners doing justice to the legendary New Yorker.
